John Pusateri’s latest series of photographs and stone lithographs began during an awarded residency at the Black Church Print Studio in Dublin, Ireland. In each of the lithographs Pusateri has juxtaposed bird skins alongside a human skull. “In the five weeks that I was in residence, I gained access to the National Museum of Ireland’s natural history storeroom to utilise unique bird study skins”.
Pusateri's drawings and prints tap into the artistic tradition of memento mori, a practice dating back to antiquity wherein artists include imagery designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and of the transience and fragility of human life.
