New Zealand’s own mid-century anti-Communist witch hunt which re-enacts the fate of Cecil Holmes, a filmmaker at the National Film Unit, who was fired because he was a member of the Communist Party.
Director: Annie Goldson
Producer: James Wallace
To accompany Annie Goldson’s documentary we are screening Mail Run, a 1947 film produced by the National Film Unit and directed by Cecil Holmes. Mail Run documents the weekly RNZAF flights from Auckland to Japan to supply Jayforce in which Holmes imparts an anti-colonialist perspective to the locations visited en route.
With thanks to the National Archives and NZ Film Archive
Join us at Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery’s Century Cinema for our inaugural Director’s Cut Film Festival. Over three days we have exclusive screenings of twelve of New Zealand film-maker Annie Goldson’s films. The Director’s Cut Film Festival celebrates and acknowledges the art of an individual New Zealand film-maker. We hope you enjoy this unique opportunity to immerse yourselves in the work of Annie Goldson, one of New Zealand’s most innovative and politically astute documentary film-makers.
Goldson has been producing and directing award-winning documentaries, docudramas and experimental film for 20 years in the United States and New Zealand. Her documentaries focus on political and social issues and have screened in film festivals and been broadcast around the world.
