Waitakere Charity Fun Run & Half Marathon

This Westy Trust event has contributed enormously to the well-being of this City. It started 13 years ago with 237 entrants and by 2009 has grown into an iconic event attracting 1400 entries.

In pursuit of city and national objectives in fitness and health and battle against inactivity and obesity, the Waitakere Charity Fun Run & Half Marathon provides something for everyone: an 11km walk or run or the challenge of a half marathon.

While the half marathoners are very serious(some of them anyway) this is about community the event has pumped more than $120000 back into Waitakere in several ways. A portion of the income from entries is contributed to the North Piha surf lifesaving club for the development of junior lifeguards. The club provides the marshals for the run.

The balance goes to the Don Oliver Youth Sports Foundation which has a long track record of identifying pre-elite athletes in Waitakere and helping them step up to national and international honours.

There were six former Don Oliver scholarship winners at the Beijing Olympics.
