Greymouth Motorcycle Street Race

There are not many places where the central business district can be closed off for a day to allow a motorbike street race to happen. We are very fortunate that Greymouth is one of those places.

Street racing has a special magic, and Greymouth is part of a small group of towns and cities where riders and spectators can enjoy the spectacle. The circuit through the CBD is 1.3km long and very tight, with riders able to speed past the police station at speeds of around 120kms!

The event has eight classes for bikes to enter including a specially built off road section for the Super Motard class of bike. Races vary from four to six laps depending on the class of bike. Three rounds are normally held each race day. This gives spectators over 24 races to watch!

Spectators have full pedestrian access around the outside of the circuit, and are able to visit the pit area, look at the bikes and talk to the riders. Spectators enjoy all the action of fantastic riding from top New Zealand and local riders.

For the last three years, the Westland Kart Club has provided demonstration races in between the rounds. The karts are clocked at speeds higher than the bikes, and being so low to the ground they provide an amazing sight.
