The Festival and the Southern Sinfonia are thrilled to present the world première performance of Symphony No. 3 by Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie. The Southern Sinfonia, under the baton of British conductor Simon Over is privileged to play the première performance of this new symphony. Anthony Ritchie turns fifty this year, and the performance of his latest opus will be a momentous occasion.
The Sinfonia will also perform a jaunty and evocative work by Anthony Ritchie’s father, John Ritchie, Emiritus Professor of Music from Canterbury University.
The dazzling Bulgarian violinist Bella Hristova will play the wonderful Beethoven Violin Concerto in the second half of the concert. Last seen in Dunedin in 2009, Hristova charmed the crowds with her virtuosic playing. She was the winner of the 2007 Michael Hill International Violin Contest and has been in demand on concert platforms around the world ever since. At the age of 25 Bella Hristova is enjoying a meteoric career.
This Symphony No 3 concert, under the baton of Simon Over, will be a triumphant occasion - celebrating glorious and evocative music from the symphonic repertoire, and a wonderful event for the opening weekend of the sixth Otago Festival of the Arts.
Programme:
Papanui Road Overture
Symphony No 3
