Professor Garry Hornby (College of Education) presents “Homework for the whole family: how parental involvement can influence academic achievement”
An extensive international literature now supports the potential of parental involvement for improving children’s academic achievements and social outcomes. The role of parents in optimising educational outcomes for children has been recognized in New Zealand by publication of the Schooling Strategy (Ministry of Education, 2005) in which improving parent and family involvement in children’s education is one of three priority areas. Findings from surveys of policies and practices regarding parental involvement at primary, intermediate and secondary schools in Canterbury will be presented and recommendations made for optimising the involvement of parents in their children’s education.
Professor Hornby was born in England and later worked as a teacher and educational psychologist in Auckland, from 1971 to 1986. He returned to the UK to work at the Universities of Manchester and Hull, with two years at the University of the West Indies, before moving to Canterbury University in 2002. He is married to a Barbadian and has two secondary school age sons. His teaching and research is in the areas of educational psychology, special education, counselling, teacher education, parental involvement and children with special needs.
The lecture is part of the 2010 UC in the City lecture series which showcases research coming out of the University's colleges, schools and research centres. Entry is free. As seating is limited, please arrive early to ensure your seat in the Philip Carter Family Auditorium.
