Desmond Tutu compared religion to a knife; it can be both useful and dangerous. It is the dangerous which drives the work of Christchurch printmaker Sandra Thomson. The danger lies in what Thomson sees as the "moral certainty and arrogance of the religious right, manifesting itself in religiously justified violence - in atrocities committed in the name of God - in the denial of scientific discoveries and in the censorship of knowledge".
Thomson's latest exhibition 'Blinkered' consists of screen printed fabric drops and a series of printed bags. The idea of printing on bags came from earlier concepts drawing connections between religion and consumerism; the original focus changed but the artist continued with the bag as a vehicle for presenting religious viewpoints.
Sandra Thomson completed a diploma in Fine Arts with Honours in 1981. Since then she has continued printmaking, drawing and painting, exhibiting regularly in solo and group shows. Thomson teaches drawing and printmaking at CPIT in Christchurch.
