The official opening of Beca Heritage Week 2010 will be marked by a prestigious awards presentation and public concert in the ChristChurch Cathedral. Each year, the Heritage Week Management Team is delighted to honour a deserving person or group with the Heritage Week Ambassador Award. The recipient is recognised for their valuable contributions to Heritage Week by organising or promoting a quality event.
Following the presentation of the Ambassador Awards, guests will be treated to an inspirational and moving concert performed by Ariana Tikao (Ohaki). Mixing whanau, whakapapa and whenua, Ariana Tikao's (Kai Tahu) show 'Ohaki' explores through music, the dying words of her ancestor, Tamati Tikao. His ohaki was spoken to his family at Opukutahi, on Banks Peninsula on 27 September, 1885. Ariana collaborates with taoka puoro legend, Richard Nunns and video artist Louise Potiki Bryant (Kai Tahu) to produce a spellbinding work, highlighting the enduring relevance of her tipuna's words.
This event is free and open to the public to attend. It promises to deliver a memorable experience for all, so come along and help to launch Beca Heritage Week 2010.
