Anzette Viviers was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa – a region known for its vivid landscapes and picturesque coastline. Born of a vast country, she sought out the infinite, and travelled the globe camera in hand. In 2008 she graduated with distinction with a Diploma in Photographic Imaging from CPIT, followed in 2009 with a Diploma in Professional Photography, again with distinction. In 2009 she received the Mortlock McCormack Law Highly Commended Award, as well as a Bronze award at the NZIPP Iris Awards.
The series 'Unbounded' is a homage to a much-loved beach from the artist's childhood – inspired by recollections as well as the work of Hawaiian artist Roy Gonzales Tabora, discovered while touring there. The artist is further inspired by classic impressionist principles, specifically the use of movement and unusual angles - both of which feature in the series. The images illustrate an exploration of some of the beaches on the east coast of the South Island. The extraordinary beauty of the landscape is accentuated by the use of exquisite colours. The series has an otherworldly quality – it captures the juxtaposition between the timeless consistency of the rocks and the flowing transitory nature of the water. The images have strong foreground interest and the way they have been rendered in postproduction reveals great detail in both the rocks and the sky. The theatrical ambiance of these works, reflects the depth of the artist's passion for the beaches of her adoptive country.
'Unbounded' reflects the artist's yearning for the infinite within, unbounded by lines on a map, to be a wanderer in Michael Ondaatje's "[a] world without borders" (The English Patient).
