Dick Endt's book The Subtropical Garden At Landsendt: A Plant Collector's Dream is a record of his life and work creating a botanical garden in West Auckland.
Forty-eight years ago Dick and Annemarie Endt purchased 20 acres of pasture land in Oratia and named it Landsendt, the name his parents had given their land in Holland.
They soon realised that they could not make a living from farming it, and decided to create something special instead: a plant collector's dream garden.
With hard work, passion and artistic flair, and over seven replantings, the Endts transformed the land into an earthly paradise with a rich and varied assortment of plants collected over the last 30 years from overseas, particularly the high Andes in South America.
Whare Wānanga, level 2.
