Urban Gad, Denmark, 1910/1911.
Two silent films starring Asta Nielsen, one of the most popular leading ladies of the 1910s and one of the first international movie stars.
Accompaniment by Adrianne Roberts. Piano courtesy NZ Film Archive and Friends of the Film Archive.
"The Abyss " (illustrated) is regarded by many as not only the important debut of Asta Nielsen, but also the film that marks the early 1910s as the golden age of Danish cinema with its feature length erotically charged melodramas. It is presented here in a digitally restored version with the inclusion of Swedish censorship outtakes, dramatically improving the quality of the central erotic dance sequence.
"The Black Dream" relates the story of Stella, a horsewoman who performs in a circus and who rises great passion in men. Due to her charms, she will be wooed by two admirers - an old jeweler and a young Count. She finally chooses one, but that choice, based upon love, still immediately causes jealousy and suspicions between the two lovers.
