Tying the Knot

The Film Archive Traveling Film Show which tours curated film screenings around the country, now comes ‘home’ at the end of each month to screen to Wellington audiences.

This month we take a look inside the world of weddings - the gorgeous dresses, the confetti, the cakes and the decorated cars. The programme reflects a broad spectrum of New Zealand weddings - from the 1930 Macewan Kerr society wedding at Old St Paul’s in Wellington, to “The Marriage of George and Mildred, whoops Shirley” (as the inter-title jokes), a more relaxed 1970s affair.

Other highlights include a 1950s Maori wedding in Raukokore with shepherds and horses outside a Catholic Church, and Carol’s 1967 nuptials featuring large quantities of mascara and inspiring bouffant hairstyles.
