After shooting black and white film in New Zealand’s streets and suburbs, and on the open road, from the mid-'70s to 2006, Peter Black has moved exclusively into colour photography. He now shoots digitally and prints his own images, taking full advantage of the incredible degree of control and archival quality offered by the latest technology and materials. Black has found a new level in his photography and is seeing more clearly and incisively than ever.
His colour work retains the sometimes ironic humour, the wry look, and, primarily, the examination of humanity and its relationship with the constructed environment. These new larger scale colour prints contain more scope, depth and detail than earlier works, and the prints seem to exhibit a hyper-real, 3-dimensional quality. Often the street or landscape appears as a stage set and the viewer is uncertain if the action was orchestrated, but it is all straight photography; each instance was found, observed and captured as it happened. Digital tools were used are used only for control of image quality, not to change the content.
