The Northland band 1814 returns to Franklin in November. The group played to a packed house in Pukekohe in March and they’re bringing their funky, r’n’b, roots reggae sound to Waiuku’s Kentish Hotel on Friday, November 12.

1814 have been one of the big movers in Kiwi music lately. They started as a dad and two of his sons playing a few tunes to support community events and festivals around their home in the Whangaroa Harbour. But word spread about how sharp they were, more band members joined, and soon they were an 8-piece outfit doing shows with Katchafire, House of Shem and Che Fu - and being invited to festivals including WOMAD.

Patu Colbert was that dad who started the band. "If you love skankin”, he says “you'll love the live shows. They’re full of energy, upbeat grooves, wicked sax and sweet soulful vocals.”

The name 1814 was taken from the year the Gospel arrived at Oihi, in the Bay Of Islands. Samuel Marsden held the first sermon there on Christmas Day, 1814.

Tickets to see 1814 on sale from The Kentish Hotel (5 Queen Street, Waiuku), Music Mania (5b Glasgow Road in Pukekohe) and through www.eventfinder.co.nz.
