Auckland Premier Baseball - Opening Day

Spring is here and the crack of the baseball bat is resonating across the ballparks of Auckland. Baseball is back for the 2011 season!

The Auckland Premier Baseball season gets off to a flyer this weekend with the top players from the Auckland competition taking to the field in the first round of the Auckland Premier Baseball League.

The season starts with a beauty, with last year's Auckland champions, the Howick Pakuranga Cyclones, taking on the 2010 National Club Champion, West City Wildcats, at 10am on the Lloyd Elsmore #1 diamond.

The West City Premier team, under Coach Alan Lotze, are back to basics this season after a number of the team which took out the Auckland and national titles in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 have not returned for the 2011 season, and a number of new faces will be taking the diamond.

Last years MVP Matt Mills is also out for the start of the season with a broken thumb, and starting pitcher Gordon Niemann is out with a torn ACL. West City will really be up against the odds in this one.

The 1pm game sees the Howick Pakuranga Skyrangers take on the newly merged Bayside Westhaven Cola Yeh team, also on the Lloyd Elsmore #1.

This games will be a cracker to open the season, so get there early to support your boys.

What better way to spend a Sunday?! So grab your friends and family, bring a picnic and some sunscreen, and get down to your local ballpark to check out the action.
