Stan Jenkins, Feilding potter, collector, educator and railway buff, amassed a significant collection of New Zealand ceramics which he generously bequeathed to Te Manawa Museums Trust in 2006. Use and Beauty reveals a wonderful selection from this collection, displayed alongside ceramics from Te Manawa’s own collection to present a thorough representation of New Zealand potters' activity in the 1970s.

Included in the exhibition are pieces by key figures in the history of New Zealand ceramics such as Mirek Smisek and Peter Stichbury, as well as pieces Stan himself made. A feature of the exhibition is a number of stunning works by Len Castle, an existing strength of the Te Manawa ceramics collection that has been further strengthened through Stan’s generosity.

Stan’s interest in pottery included a commitment to documenting the history of ceramic production in New Zealand. Following his retirement from teaching in the mid-1980s, Stan filmed Len Castle and Mirek Smisek at work, and these films screen in the exhibition.

Exhibition developed and toured by Te Manawa Museums Trust, Palmerston North.
