The Rotorua Primary School’s Festival was established in 1978 to collectively celebrate Maori song, story-telling, poetry, dance and kapa haka. In the last decade a trend has developed where schools now tend to perform traditional and/or contemporary kapa haka.
It has maintained its uniqueness by continuing to be the only cultural event for children within the Rotorua district and wider areas to perform in and that is ‘non-competitive’. Consequently many children, of all ethnicities, can participate without the stress and pressure of making the grade.
