On Thursday, 11 November, Parnell galleries will once more serve up a tempting smorgasbord of New Zealand art through to 7.30pm - the perfect entrée to a memorable evening at one of Parnell’s great restaurants.

Take your time perusing Parnell’s contemporary, traditional and cutting edge array of fine art. This sociable event centres on the cluster of galleries located in the middle of Parnell Road: ARTIS Gallery, Jonathan Grant Galleries, Pankhurst Studio Gallery, Parnell Gallery, Pierre Peeters Gallery, Sanderson Contemporary Art and Sense Art Interiors.

On the menu this month – War and Death.

Jonathan Grant Galleries presents a rare and highly important collection of Peter McIntyre drawings made while serving in Crete and the Western Desert during World War II. McIntyre was appointed War Artist for the Second NZ Expeditionary Forces (2nd NZEF) by General Bernard Freyberg on 1 January 1941. The exhibition also features drawings by artist and political cartoonist Neville Colvin, who also served in the 2nd NZEF in Egypt and Italy. An important contributor to The N.Z.E.F. Times during the War, Colvin is most well known for being the creator of 'Clueless' and other witty sketches parodying life amongst the troops.

Parnell Gallery presents “Of the Land” by Matt Gauldie. Gauldie was born in Wellington in 1976. In April 2004, he was named as the official New Zealand Army artist, on the strength of his work in capturing the return of the “Unknown Warrior” on canvas. Gauldie's keen interest in painting people has been a consistent component in his work throughout his career - whether within the New Zealand landscape or in the desert of Afghanistan.

Last year, Gauldie held a retrospective ANZAC Exhibition Army Art at Auckland War Memorial Museum. At the official opening, the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Helen Clarke, announced that he would be continuing for another three year term as New Zealand's Army Artist.

Pankhurst Gallery presents a new work, “Dawn Arrival” by studio artist, Alvin Pankhurst. Over 4 million years old the Moeraki Boulders have been washed out from the bluffs along the shore. Two of these boulders were found to contain dinosaur bones, from both the seven metre long plesiosaur and from the smaller mosasaur. There were many shipwrecks around Dunedin, and this mantlepiece would have been one of many household goods bought out by the early settlers. The artist’s mother was born in Oamaru, and has photos of Pankhurst at the boulders as a baby.

There is a host of really exciting works this month in Parnell. Be sure to visit our website www.parnell.net.nz for further gallery details or better still; take a stroll down Parnell Road this Thursday.
