Victoria University of Wellington invites you to a free two-part public lecture to be presented by Professor Richard Furneaux, Group Manager, Carbohydrate Chemistry at IRL Ltd and Adjunct Professor at the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, and by Professor Graham Le Gros, Research Director, Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, and Professor in the School of Biological Sciences.
- New Treatments for Unmet Medical Needs - a Kiwi Contribution.
Richard Furneaux, FRSNZ and winner of the 2006 Hector Medal leads the Carbohydrate Chemistry group at Industrial Research Limited (IRL), one of New Zealand’s Crown Research institutes. His world-renowned team of 30 research chemists focuses on the discovery and commercialisation of ‘Glycotherapeutics’—drugs and dietary supplements based upon knowledge of the role of carbohydrate molecules in biological processes, to interrupt disease processes such as Alzheimer’s.
- Training our Bodies’ Immune System to Fight Modern Diseases.
Graham Le Gros leads a team of 90 research scientists who focus on making vaccines against cancer and treatments of diseases such as MS, arthritis, asthma and tuberculosis. Prior to being Research Director of the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, Professor Le Gros worked at the National Institute of Health in Washington where his work led to fundamental discoveries of how the allergic immune process works. His time in the USA was followed by senior research positions at Ciba-Geigy Ltd in Switzerland where he was involved in the development of new drugs for the treatment of allergy and asthma.
Richard and Graham will talk about the most recent progress in combating modern day diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s which affect or will affect a large proportion of the population.
