Kawerau will be the first host town of this new championship and the Ron Hardie Recreation Centre will be the ideal venue for competitors and spectators to view this extremely popular martial art. Originally developed in South Korea by the armed forces in the 1950s, the sport has many followers and has been an Olympic sport since 2000.

Taekwondo New Zealand is pleased to support the 1st TNZ National Maori Taekwondo Open Championships to be held in conjunction with the Master Norm Edwards Memorial Invitation. The tournament is open to all WTF style organisations for coloured belts (8th geup and above) and black belts of Maori descent.
