Kaukapakapa will be celebrating 150 years of European settlement in November this year. A variety of events have been planned from a fun bowling afternoon at the Bowling Club to a traditional district picnic in Sinclair Park.

Reminiscing has long been a pastime for residents of Kaukapakapa. They remember when the saleyards were a bustling weekly event, the hall was opposite Henley House and the road was flooded yet again. Even older residents remember gravel roads.

In the '20s when Athol McLachlan’s grandfather purchased 500 acres, it was a horse-track that connected the family with Kaukapakapa, used especially for taking their cream to Mount Rex. Over the years gum-diggers developed the horse-track so that they could deliver gum to Dye’s Store in Kaukapakapa. In the '30s the track become what we now know as McLachlan Road, Kaukapakapa.

Athol is one of three generations of McLachlan’s living on the road that takes their family name. “I’ve lived here all my life and the view that I’ve got is as good as anywhere.” He says. Son Norm and his family live across the gully from Athol and his other son Malcolm lives in nearby Wainui.

Getting to know who lives down your road will be a highlight on the Mix & Mingle Friday Night session on 26th November; the opening event celebrating 150 years of settlement over the weekend 26-28 November, 2010.

“Many pioneer family surnames are road names in Kaukapakapa,” says Athol, “and we are setting up the tables in the hall with road names so people can sit with others who live down their road.”

Saturday 27th November will feature a special luncheon, historic buildings and garden open day and an old time dance.

The celebrations conclude with a combined church service Sunday morning, with the classic Kiwi district picnic on Sunday afternoon 28th November completing the weekend.
