Originally an idea conceptualised by well-known Christchurch songwriter, Andy Thompson, a longtime CPIT performance tutor and mentor of songwriters in the Canterbury region.
During his years of tutoring, many students had written songs about the Canterbury region and about community. The seed for the CD was born from many of these songs. Along with former students, he engaged other folk musicians to bring their music of community to the table.
The theme of the CD became 'local artists reflect the spirit of Canterbury in their original songs'
Auspiciously, Peter Donnelly, the Sand Dancer, was asked about creating a unique piece of sand art for the project, and on a clear New Brighton winter morning, enthusiastically created all the artwork for the CD before it was washed away in high tide.
Recording began in early-2010 at NightShift Studio and the 15-tracks produced by Arnie van Bussel. The individual songwriters also brought in additional local voices and musicians on their tracks. In all, there were 27 unique contributors to this CD of community.
