The French Lieutenant’s Woman

Wellington Repertory Theatre presents The French Lieutenant’s Woman, 26 May to 5 June at the Gryphon Theatre.

‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ is based on the classic novel by John Fowles, and has been adapted for theatre by Mark Healy, who has successfully adapted a number of English classics such as ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and ‘The Collector.’

Fowle’s book, written in the late 1960s, mixes romance with Darwin, Marx and Freud, to tell the story of the poor, but educated woman, Sarah Woodruff, who becomes the erotic obsession of the fossil-hunting gentleman, Charles Smithson. He breaks off his engagement to the delightful young Ernestina in his pursuit of Sarah, whose earlier nursing of, and alleged relationship with, a French lieutenant shipwrecked off the coast of Devon in 1867, had scandalised provincial Lyme Regis.

Performances are Wednesday 26 May to Saturday 29 May at 8:00pm, Sunday at 4:00pm, Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 June at 6:30pm and Thursday 3 June to Saturday 5 June at 8:00pm
