Wushu is one of the oldest martial arts in history. Spanning over 4000 years, wushu was once used as a means of survival and also a way of training soldiers.
The Chinese characters for Wushu are made up of two characters or words; Wu meaning 'martial' and Shu meaning 'art'.
Wushu has many elements whether as an art form; for combat; heath; self-defense; mental discipline; recreational pursuit or competition. Wushu is characterized by dynamic and fluid movements along with aerial kicks, circular techniques and weaponry.
Wushu training leads to increased flexibility, balance, physical and mental stamina, speed and dynamic power. Wushu is also good for developing confidence, character and self-discipline . Wushu can be practiced solo, paired or in groups, either barehanded or armed with weaponry.
The elite Wushu athletes from China are visiting New Zealand for the first time and will perform one show only at the Wellington Town Hall on Sunday 23 May 4.00PM.
The show will be in two parts with the first involving local performances. The second part will be a visually dynamic and entertaining performance by the Chinese wushu athletes.
Visit the NZ Kung-Fu Wushu Federation website www.wushu.org.nz for more information. Tickets through Ticketek.
