Legendary jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd, a firm favorite on the international festival circuit since the mid sixties, performs for the first time in New Zealand in early May 2010.
Lloyd brings his New Quartet featuring Jason Moran; piano, Reuben Rogers; bass, Eric Harland; drums with Lloyd playing tenor saxophone, alto flute, and taragato.
Lloyd was one of the most engaging and intriguing figures from the sixties jazz scene He was working and creating a significant body of work in the same environment as heavy weights John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk etc (the list could go on for pages actually) and extraordinarily outselling all of them!
Lloyd is credited with discovering piano prodigy Keith Jarrett. 'Forrest Flower', Lloyds mid-sixties quartet album which featured Jarrett drummer Jack Dejohnette and bassist Cecil McBee was an early career peak with the recording capturing a rapturous live performance at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival. The album sold an unprecedented, for a pure jazz release, million plus copies.
Lloyd, however, is no mere historical figure living on a reputation forged several generations earlier. There is ample evidence to suggest the man is at the peak of his considerable powers currently. His recent string of albums on the ECM label are testimony to a peak of creative activity as invigorating and enthralling as any from his sixties heyday.
Are you getting the impression this is the must see jazz attraction of the year? An artist who was always favourably compared to two of the absolute jazz heavy wieghts Coltrane and Rollins is currently at peak of his powers and he will be playing at The Bruce Mason Centre in early May.
Whether you are a jazz novice, neophyte or chin stroking expert you need to be at this performance .
Music retailer Marbecks in conjunction with Crucial Concerts are proud to be able to give New Zealand jazz fans the unique opportunity to witness The Charles Lloyd New Quartet in performance.
