Despite refusing to sign the Treaty of Waitangi when it was presented to them in 1840, Te Arawa later came to be considered among the Crown’s most loyal allies.

How did that come about? What did such loyalty mean in practice and what were the outcomes for the people of Te Arawa?

Drawing on The Beating Heart: A Political and Socio-Economic History of Te Arawa, co-authored with David Armstrong in 2008, O’Malley will discuss these questions.
