Janna van Hasselt’s work documents her travels and experiences, with constant references to place, routine and belonging. This body of work explores notions of habit and comfort, wherein the artist attempts to piece together a sense of normalcy in a foreign environment by paying homage to all the ingredients of her daily routine.
Van Hasselt challenges the traditional notions and expectations of printmaking by applying silkscreen and lithographic print processes along with intricate layering of paint to unusual materials including linen, rubber and plastic. The resulting pieces have strong textural juxtapositions between print, paint and substrate and a sculptural quality quite unprecedented in printmaking.
Combining vibrant gestural marks and more ‘realistic’ figurative elements, van Hasselt makes no effort to distinguish between reality and representation, but prefers the jumble as a truer representation of her personal narratives and fixations. The resulting works are variously observational, whimsical, reflective of the human condition, and deeply personal. Although they comment on habit, their colour, energy and optimism represent a triumph over habit, a reflection of the artist’s sharp wit and sense of humour.
