Love, jealousy and, finally, a happy ending - the musical genius of Henry Purcell has been combined with the enduring prose of Shakespeare for the Linden Singers’ mid-year concert.
Much of the programme features a selection of the solos, duets and choruses from Purcell’s semi-opera "The Fairy Queen" presented by the choir with soprano soloists Caroline Hichman and Karen Jackson and baritone Jonathan Krebs.
In addition, the concert will include the world premiere of the mass "Missa Jinca" composed by Wellington musician David Dobson. Written especially for Caroline Hickman whom he taught at Wellington Girls College, she will perform the piece alongside trumpeter Jonathan Krebs, organist Paul Rosaman and the choir.
To round out the Cathedral programme Paul Rosaman, who is the current president of the Wellington Organists Association, will play several organ solos and the choir will sing two compositions written by the their accompanist, Elizabeth Curtis.
The Linden Singers have been performing in the Cathedral with the Cathedral Organ since the late 1970s and made numerous recordings in the building for Radio New Zealand. To show their appreciation for the ongoing use of the Cathedral the choir will donate any profits from the Cathedral concert to the Cathedral Organ restoration fund.
