A creative space, also called a hacker space or a maker space, is a physical, community-run space for building and collaborating on projects. The pooling of resources allows the purchase of equipment and services that most individuals wouldn't have the buying power to access alone. It also creates a community of people, encouraging collaboration from different perspectives and experiences.
We are holding a meeting for anyone interested in discussing the setup of a Creative Space in Auckland.
We'll be discussing a wide variety of topics during the meeting.
Here are a few you might like to think about or discuss with each other before attending:
• Funding for the shared resources: equipment, venue. This will probably come in the form of a regular subscription - how much would you be willing to pay on a monthly or weekly basis?
• What sort of membership model should we have?
- Does everybody pay the same levy?
- Do we have different membership models for different people?
• How should the space be run?
- Would there be individual roles to look after aspects of the space?
- How are people put into these roles? (Elected? Volunteers? For a fixed term, or indefinite?)
- How do we decide what equipment to buy/rent?
- How do we ensure security for the building and the resources?
- Do we have access keys/passes/codes, and who will get them?
- How will finances be looked after?
• Membership
- What criterion should there be for people wishing to join e.g. references, a bond, a trial period?
- Do we have an elected committee, or do all members get involved in every decision?
- Rules of membership
- How do we resolve disputes?
• Venue
- Where in Auckland should the Creative Space be?
- How much of the income should be spent on the venue?
- What other facilities are important to have? e.g. social space, kitchen, shower
• Safety
• How do we handle safety issues around equipment?
