Victoria McIntosh’s exhibition, My Invented History, explores issues of identity associated with adoption. It juxtaposes the portraits of Otago’s pioneers in the Museum’s famous Smith Gallery with Victoria’s artworks, reflecting on the loss of ancestral identity experienced by adoptees under the old ‘Closed Adoption’ system.

It invites questions about the history and future of adoption legislation and its impact on adoptee identity. This show also marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark Adult Adoption Information Act (1985) and the 5th anniversary of the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology [HART] Register (2005).
22 May - 25 July
