Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents...

Cathedral Series - Celebrating the Elements - Fire

Prepare for a feisty offering as brass dominates in this programme, the second in the Cathedral Series and subtitled Fire. It is with great pleasure we welcome back CSO’s previous Acting Principal Trumpet, Sarah Wilson as she performs Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet in E flat Major, a work written for Haydn’s friend, Anton Weidinger. Gabrieli – the music master of the San Marco Cathedral, Venice in the 16th century – wrote works exploiting the unique cathedral acoustic, with antiphonal groups of players placed in separate locations around the cathedral. This technique, called coro spezzati, is one of the most original ideas in music history and was taken up by American eccentric Charles Ives in his seminal composition The Unanswered Question.

The featured solo trumpet asks mankind’s “eternal question”, a group of winds representing mankind’s troubled attempts to answer it, and a group of strings representing Druids, ignoring the question as they perform their solemn mysteries.

Handel’s exuberant Fireworks music concludes the programme.
