The Silencio Ensemble will perform a programme of new musical works as part of the University of Canterbury Platform Arts Festival, highlighting a variety of different approaches to musical composition.
Eight new works have been developed specially for the 10-piece ensemble. Their Platform concert will feature the compositions of five University of Canterbury current or recent staff and students - namely Dr Patrick Shepherd, Dr Gao Ping, Monty Monteath, Chris Adams and Chris Reddington as well as Christchurch composers Pieta Hextall, Tamara Smith and Mike Kime. Many of the players are also former students of the School of Music.
Founded in 2004, Silencio Ensemble is a Christchurch-based contemporary music ensemble made up of jazz and classical musicians. They are committed to working with New Zealand composers, as well composers within the ensemble, creating unique and exciting performances.
Presented as a part of the University of Canterbury's Platform Arts Festival 2010, a dynamic 11 day extravaganza of art, lectures, theatre, music and film.
