Sociologist Sarah Thornton took us behind the scenes of the contemporary arts world for a witty and entertaining look at aspects of buying, selling and creating serious art in her bestseller, Seven Days in the Art World.
We "travel" with her from London to Los Angeles, New York to Tokyo, Basel to Venice, and "witness" the dramas of a Christie’s auction, the competition behind the award of the Turner Prize, the massive undertakings of Takashi Murakami’s three studios, the mayhem of an elite art fair, the eccentricities of the writers at Artforum, the agonies of a notorious "crit" session at an art school, and the wonders of a reputation-building Biennale.
We’re delighted to welcome Sarah to Auckland to talk about the world of contemporary art with chair Linda Tyler.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
