In researching his new biography William Golding: the Man Who Wrote Lord of the Flies, John Carey had unprecedented access to Golding's manuscript archive, and a two-and-a-half million word journal that Golding kept every day for 20 years.
There were two sides to the man: a faithful husband, loving father, brave naval officer and teacher (known to his pupils as "Scruff"), he believed he was a monster and "saw the seeds of all evil in his own heart".
Carey discusses Golding's complex character, the extraordinary events that made up his somewhat tragicomic life, and how and why a biographer is driven to delve so deeply into another person's life.
Introduction: Rick Gekoski.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
