Granta was founded in 1889 by students at Cambridge University, and relaunched as a magazine of new writing in 1979. It publishes the world’s finest and new writers on a variety of important subjects, but has no political or literary manifesto: just "a belief in the power and urgency of the story".

The Monthly is an Australian magazine of politics, society and the arts, which leapt onto the scene in 2005: "The Monthly is rooted in simple but powerful storytelling. … the times cry out for an intelligent, independent voice".

Our own literary journal, Sport, was initiated by Fergus Barrowman in 1988 and publishes writing by many of New Zealand's leading and up-and-coming writers. John Freeman and Ben Naparstek were appointed as Editors of Granta and The Monthly, respectively, in 2009.

All are writers and critics in their own right. Do they see themselves as "the boy with a finger in the dyke" when it comes to dwindling outlets for [literary] criticism and good writing?

Chair: New Zealand Listener Arts and Books Editor, Guy Somerset.

Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
