The first email was sent less than 40 years ago; by 2011 there will be 3.2 billion users. John Freeman makes a plea for communication that is more selective and nuanced and, above all, more sociable in Shrinking the World: The 4,000-year story of how email came to rule our lives.

Geraldine Brooks says: "Freeman's impeccably researched, eloquently argued book reveals the many ways this so-called boon to communication and productivity has become a distracting, privacy-sapping, alienating, addicting time-suck. He has convinced me that the new mantra for our times ought to be Tune out, Turn off, Unplug".

Join John for insight into how and why we’ve ended up with an inbox of thousands of screeching, beseeching messages crying out for our attention. Chair: Stephen Stratford.

Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
