John Carey, Emeritus Professor of English at Oxford University, published the first full biography of William Golding in 2009.
Golding’s most famous work, Lord of the Flies, had been rejected by numerous publishers before it was rescued from Faber & Faber’s ‘out’ pile by his lifetime editor Charles Monteith, and the rest is history.
Carey had access to Golding’s daily journals and other private papers and has produced a fascinating background to Golding’s classic novel, not to mention the Nobel Prize-winner’s other twelve books.
Tickets on sale 23 April.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
