May is New Zealand Music Month. The APO celebrates with an informal concert featuring works by John Psathas, our composer in residence; John Wells, Auckland City organist; and Stephen Clothier, winner of the 2009 Trusts Secondary Composers’ Competition.
It’s a great opportunity to not only hear some new New Zealand music, but also to hear the new Town Hall organ in all its loud glory, and hear master percussionist Pedro Carniero play the work he commissioned for marimba from John Psathas.
As City Organist, John Wells instigated the project to rebuild the Auckland Town Hall organ; after 10 years' planning, fundraising and construction, he inaugurated the new organ on 21 March 21 this year with a rousing rendition of Bach's great D minor Toccata and Fugue. In this concert he demonstrates the new power of the organ with his own Organ Concerto.
