Award-winning novelists and short story writers Emily Perkins and Damien Wilkins have individually been referred to as "the most important writer of [his/her] generation".
Both spent their formative writing years at Victoria University, and both manage demanding roles on top of their writing (Emily as presenter of ‘The Good Word’ and Damien as a lecturer at Victoria University). Emily won the 2009 Montana Medal with Novel About My Wife, "a taut, sensuous and chilling portrait of a marriage beset by paranoia and obsession". Damien’s latest novel Somebody Loves Us All (2009) "asks large questions about how we express ourselves, through speech, gesture, action and silence".
Is it cathartic to write imaginatively about the pressures, contradictions and downright laughable minutiae of contemporary life? And what do they see in store for [their] fiction and their life as readers in the next ten years?
Chair: Fergus Barrowman.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
