There aren’t many 20-somethings who find themselves Editor of a major magazine, let alone conducting more than 40 interviews with some seriously big hitters in the literary and intellectual world. Ben Naparstek was appointed editor of The Monthly, a magazine which focuses on Australian politics, society and culture in May 2009 at the age of 23.
His first book, In Conversation: Encounters with Great Writers (2009), is a collection of interviews with the famous, the difficult, and the sometimes downright elusive. How did he get on with the likes of Michel Houellebecq, Paul Krugman, Bernard-Henri Levy, Janet Malcolm, Toni Morrison, and Haruki Murakami? And what, in his opinion, makes a good interviewer, and alternatively, interview subject.
Ben talks to New Zealand Listener Arts and Books Editor Guy Somerset.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
