Of his greatest choral masterwork, A German Requiem, Johannes Brahms wrote: “As for the title, I must admit I should like to leave out the word ‘German’ and refer instead to ‘Humanity’.” Written as a memorial to Brahms’ mother, the German Requiem is a work of great beauty which transcends religion and instead offers in its profound humanism, comfort and consolation to the grieving. The concert opens with a new piano concerto (Piano Concerto 3) by Dunedin-based composer Anthony Ritchie which is bursting with rhythmic vitality and a sense of adventure.
FREE pre-concert talk by Dr Nelson Wu, 6.30 pm
