Yiyun Li grew up in Beijing and moved to the United States in 1996. Her debut collection, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2005), won the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, PEN/Hemingway Award, Guardian First Book Award, and California Book Award for first fiction; it was also shortlisted for the Kiriyama Prize and Orange Prize for New Writers.
In 2007 Yiyun was selected by Granta as one of the 21 Best Young American Novelists under 35. Ann Patchett praised Yiyun Li’s debut novel, The Vagrants (2009) "as important politically as it is artistically". Set in China in the late 1970s in a small town after the dramatic and harrowing execution of a young woman, this stunning novel is both a universal portrait of human frailty and courage, and a mesmerizing work of art.
Chair: Granta Editor John Freeman.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
