Marti Friedlander is one of our most acclaimed photographers: her images are both familiar and startling at the same time.

She has been observing the lives of New Zealanders for over 50 years - from Māori moko to Whina Cooper and the land march, from Rita Angus to Norman Kirk, from Israel to Fiji, Friedlander has not simply recorded the places, events, and personalities of recent history; her photographs offer an open dialogue with their subject, inviting the viewer’s prolonged engagement and interpretation.

"Whether photographing artists and writers or protests and street scenes, her empathetic scrutiny draws out essential features of her subjects, picturing the key human dynamics of conflict, ambivalence, anger and warmth".

Marti talks about a selection of images from Marti Friedlander with the book's author and noted art historian Leonard Bell.

Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
