Poet Alison Wong’s debut novel, As the Earth Turns Silver, has had rave reviews.
Set in the early 20th century, it is an intertwining story of two families: Wong Chung-yung has recently arrived in Wellington and finds himself in a land that does not welcome Chinese; Katherine McKechnie is struggling to raise two children after the death of her husband. In a climate of hostility towards foreign newcomers, and with the First World War an ominous presence, Katherine and Yung embark on a poignant, dangerous and far-reaching love affair. ‘… a truly beautiful book about the sadness of racism and why we allow ourselves to be hurt by love.
I have been lucky enough to work with some great writers exploring Chinese culture … Alison Wong is one of those.’ (Toby Eady)
Chair: Graham Beattie.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
