In South-West of Eden: A Memoir, 1932-1956 (2010), a moving coming-of-age memoir by leading poet, novelist and critic C. K. Stead, he writes a life "lived by history" from his birth to 1956, the year he left New Zealand for the first time.
From running wild in Cornwall Park, joining the Labour Party aged seven, discovering poetry in a third-form English class and enjoying a newly-wed annus mirabilis on Takapuna Beach, Stead charts his life in Tamaki-makau-rau against the changing social fabric of New Zealand and illuminates 23 years of his time and his place.
Join C.K. Stead for an engaging hour of memorable reminiscing. Chair: Mac Jackson.
Presented as a part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.
