South Coast Gallery invite you to view 'Watershed', an exhibition of recent paintings by Turi Park, on display from 11 - 27 March 2010.

"Around the time of my Father’s passing I experienced many visions, dreams and recollections to do with water. As a young painter of landscapes I’ve often pondered why I’m painting – while trying to capture the “what” I’m painting.

While it was Mum that taught me to be creative, my Father and his deep knowledge of place, is the main reason I have painted landscapes. Last year we lost Dad to terminal brain cancer, but these works are not about loss. These works are about life flowing on, and the knowledge, wisdom and regard that my father passed on about the workings of the systems of life.

The works are connected like a stream through the theme of water. Of light dancing on its surface, reflecting and providing life.

The images are of joyful moments that I shared on my last journeys with Dad. The silver linings of a sad old time. This time of loss that heightened my senses. Sharpened my eye as I searched for souvenirs – mementos. Made me more conscious of my desire to etch these experiences and memories of scenes onto the backs of my eyes.

As paintings, this is where they have come from. These are some of the visions that got me through.

Together they’re like a mix tape, an offering… something to bring along. To play on the road in the van together. The names of the images relate to songs that I’ve been listening to while painting, thinking and meditating on the loss of my Father. And these places we shared being in together.

The artists are Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Laurie Anderson, Taj Mahal, JJ Cale, The Allman Brothers, Ry Cooder, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson, Clifton Chenier and others that played along in the background." - Artist Statement
