The industry that began with Johannes Gutenberg in 1439 has seen a few changes in its 570-year history, but as we enter the second decade of the 21st century, the once familiar environment of author, agent, publisher and bookseller is in flux.
Amazon's ‘Kindle' has set alight the digital book market and Apple is poised to enter the fray with a new as yet ‘secret' device, the Apple ‘tablet'. Publishers now sell direct to readers, and writers are publishing themselves on the internet and on mobile phones.
We ask a panel of experienced industry figures for their take on the future of the literary industry: Sam Elworthy (Director, Auckland University Press); Derek Johns (Managing Director, AP Watt UK); Michael Heyward (Publisher,Text Publishing, Aus) and Laurie Chittenden (Editor, HarperCollins Publishers, US).
This session is chaired by Noel Murphy.
