The strings of the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra play Haydn's popular and baroque violin concerto Ho. 7 and the baroque-styled Holberg Suite by Grieg. The winds will present popular works by Grainger and Milhaud.

They will be led by Ken Young, conductor, and Martin Riseley, conductor and violin soloist. Ken Young began playing both tuba and percussion with the Christchurch Symphony and National Youth Orchestra while studying composition at Canterbury and Auckland Universities, eventually being appointed Principal Tuba of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, a position which gave him the financial independence to freely pursue composition and conducting. In 2004, Young was awarded a Lilburn Trust Citation Award for Outstanding Services to New Zealand Music.

Martin Riseley is the new Head of Strings at the NZSM. The Concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for over 15 years, he has performed as soloist and conductor many times in North America. Originally from Christchurch, he won the TVNZ Young Musicians Competition in 1988 before heading off to Juilliard, where he completed Masters and Doctoral degrees as a student of Dorothy DeLay.
