Watch New Zealand's best baristas battle it out for the Lower North Island championship title at Caffe L'affare on College Street in Wellington.

Coffee Connoisseur’s get ready – New Zealand’s best baristas will be on stage and showing off their coffee making skills to audiences around the country. Watch up close the skill and passion it takes to be a top-notch competitive barista.

The New Zealand Barista Championship is held in March and April. The three regional events take place in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. The grand final will be in Auckland on Saturday 17 April.

The Championship is the only national coffee competition. It brings together New Zealand’s greatest coffee talent in one spot – it’s best baristas and it’s world standard judges.

The winner of the Championship will represent New Zealand at the World Championship in London in June of 2010. He or she will compete against representatives from 50 other Nations. The NZ Runner-up and Third place also win trips to London to see the action first hand.

The action begins at 10am, when the first competitor will prepare three sets of espresso beverages. He or she will serve to each of the four sensory judges four espressos, four cappuccinos and four Signature Beverages in only 15 minutes.

A Signature Beverage is an espresso based drink that the competitor will have created him- or herself. It will have been inspired by the competitors chosen coffee blend.

The NZ Barista Champion will be announced on Saturday 17 April at 5pm. All events are open to the public and have free entry.
