Neil Cross, novelist and scriptwriter, is preoccupied with families, their secrets, the limits of responsibility and the implications of complicity.

Cross is the author of six novels, the latest of which, 'Burial', a story about murder and remorse, or at least partial remorse, has been described by the Guardian as "creepy, unsettling, and subtle".

His other books that examine familial relationships include Always the Sun, a story of bereavement and parenthood which was nominated for the Man Booker. His memoir, 'Heartland' (2006), tells of his relationship with his domineering stepfather and was described as having "the verve of fiction and the vulnerability of autobiography".

Cross also writes for the television series Spooks. "Yeah," he recently told an interviewer, "we use KGB, CIA and MI5 advisors. Personally I've never actually made use of them because I don't trust spies. The information they volunteer isn't the information I want to hear. I want to hear what they're not allowed to tell us, what they don't tell us."

Join him in conversation with Noel Murphy.
